I recently received a coat which I believe is faux fur. It is dark brown with a light brown collar. Inside there is a tag that says “Fashioned in Tudor City… Fabric by Malden. I tried searching the web and found a company – Malden fabrics that did make faux fur in the 70-80’s. Can you tell me anything about the coat??
Sheri: I’ve forwarded your question on to our vintage fabric expert.
Malden Mills was a factor in the Faux Fur market for many years. Joan can fill in the details.
this will give you the up-and-down history of Malden Mills, now known as Polartec.. It is most famous for developing Polartec and polar fleeces and specializes in producing synthetic plush fabrics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malden_Mills will give you the details.
If the label states that coat fabric is a Malden fabric, then it is a synthetic fabric aka manufactured fiber made from polyester. I would suggest that you contact the company at http://www.milldirecttextiles.com/ for information relating to your coat. The only reference I could find relating to Tudor City that it is a historical district in NYC, now residential.
Sorry I can’t be of more assistance but I hope that Malden can tell you more about your coat.
Stay warm and Good Luck,
