Should Silk Be Washed Before Dyeing

Should silk be washed before dyeing? I am using 8mm silk. Thanks Joan

Joan,
at Dharma Trading Co. they recommend washing before dyeing. This gets out any stray silkworm gum that may remain and cause blotching in the dyeing process. Get some Synthrapol from Dharma for this purpose. Finish the ends of your fabric by serging or zigzagging before dyeing. If you don’t, the raveling threads can tangle and wrap around the fabric, causing inadvertent tie-dyeing.
have fun!
Jennifer
