“Elastic woven satin”?

My son is getting married in October, and I’m on the hunt for a mother-of-the-groom dress.  Unfortunately, most dresses I like are only available online.  I’m a bit hesitant since I haven’t ordered clothing online before.  One dress that I do really like says it’s made of “elastic woven satin,” and I can’t for the life of me figure out what that fabric is.  Any ideas??  Thanks!!

It means the person making it doesn’t know what the fiber content is. It’s probably one of the new satin poly/spandex blends. Really pretty, great to work with, stretchy and comfortable. Joannes carry’s it if you want to get a feel for it before ordering. Make sure to order in plenty of time for shipping to make a mistake or two and then still have time to have it altered. If you are orderimg from China or Korea make sure to clarify measurements so they don’t make it in metric instead of inches.

    Is elastic woven satin dyeable?

  3. Kirsten says:

    Hi Katie,
To answer your questions, yes and no. Elastic satin is possible to dye, at least the ones I have seen are, if you know what your doing and you do not expect it to come out the way you want it too. Jaquard makes a powdered dye that you can use in the washing machine that will come out evenly but very pale. You will get unpredictable results with this fabric because of the fiber content blend but it will dye. Hope that helps.
