Type of fabric used?

Do you have any idea what type of fabric was used in the famous pink dress worn by Kim Novak in the 1955 movie Picnic. It is soft enough to fall evenly in a full skirt but isn’t as sheer as chiffon.Thanks,Wendy

    Hi Wendy,

    Looks like chiffon to me but could be a double georgette. Kirsten has done more work with costumes so I leave the question for her to reply.

    Hi Wendy,
    I am thinking that dress is a silk Organza or a chiffon. It’s clear that it is quite full and is double layered in some areas and has an under layer which would account for its non-opacity. Hope that helps.

    It could be chiffon or silk organza over a denser underlay. That seems to be the most logical.

    I thought it might be batiste, but that is only used in baby wear and nighties.
