What You Need For A Fabric Business

Wal-Mart stores are closing their fabric departments as of January 1st. I would like to open a fabric store as quilting and crafts are a big item in this area. We are located between to major interstates, I-77 and I-81. JoAnn’s is approximately one hour away. How do you go about finding suppliers and approximately how much investment would a person need to start a fabric business?
Thank You,

Salli: While I don’t know how much investment will be needed, I do know of several wholesale trade shows, to attend.
Consider visiting the next edition of the Quilt Show in October, in Houston, TX Oct. 27-29. Visit www.quilts.com to register to attend.
Also, in September is the International Textile Expo September 17-19 in Las Vegas (www.textileshow.com).
Another show, one that ends August 30, is part of an apparel show. While I don’t expect you’ll be able to attend this edition, they do have a list of exhibitors on their web site. Visit www.fabricshow.com to find out the next edition, and to do some “homework”.
Also, there is the Los Angeles International Fabric Show, October 15-17. Visit www.californiamarketcenter.com to register to attend. I’ll be the one wearing the Ask Andy badge. Talk to other attendees at the show. Ask a lot of questions. Attend seminars.
Ask vendors for their best selling styles. Spend time in stores near your home and in some locations that are one hour away.
Spend your time, before you spend your money. Decide if you want to add a web site, to allow you to sell fabrics, around the world, as well.
Follow your dreams.
Let us know how you are doing…………………..
Good Luck,
Andy
